snowballsDoes your dog head out on a winter adventure looking like a furry winter voyager and come back looking like Frosty the Snowdog?

Owners of long-haired dogs often contact us with their winter weather woes. One common problem is the snow that sticks to, and balls up on the fur surrounding a dog’s paws, legs and belly. Here are some tips for preventing and removing “snowballs” from dog fur.

bootSo, you’ve determined your dog does needs boots.  You head to the store (or order them online), open the box, call your dog over, and reluctantly they hand over a paw as you outfit them in their new boots.  And then…the boot dance.  You know, the paw shaking, high-stepping, boot dance.

If this happens to you, don’t be alarmed. Remember this is probably the first time your dog has ever had something on their paws, and just like humans have a break-in period for their shoes, dogs will too!  Here are a few tips to keep your dog from doing the moonwalk in their Ruff Wear boots (or at least keep the moonwalking to a minimum!). Orion is rewarded with his favorite toy after finding the Grizzly Bear scat

The pack at Ruff Wear was treated to an awesome demonstration outside their Bend, Oregon Headquarters recently. Liz and Orion, a hard working team from Conservation Canines (an Ambassador for Ruff Wear) stopped by for a visit and a demo. It was a rare treat having Liz and Orion stop in Bend because the Conservation Canine teams are typically out in extremely remote locations conducting research on endangered species.

Orion, a five-year-old black lab rescue dog, demonstrated his amazing ability to locate Grizzly Bear scat (Liz “seeded” the field with scat samples outside our office for the demo). Watching a working dog “work” is truly amazing. Orion is just one of several Conservation Canine dogs that really put Ruff Wear gear through it’s paces. Thanks again for the demo Liz and Orion!

December Dog Tale of the Month – Sophie’s First Snow Adventure

from: Greg (Ruff Wear’s Retail Brand Planner) and Sophie (newest canine addition to the Ruff Wear Pack)

location: Bend, Oregon

Hi, Sophie Here…

I know it’s been a little while since my first blog post. As promised, I wanted to give you feedback on all of Ruff Wear’s great toys. I have tried them and can’t wait to tell you what I think.

But, toys are going to have to wait. You see, over the weekend here in Bend, Oregon we had an unpredicted snow storm that dumped a foot of fresh new snow outside my door. Having never seen snow before, all I can say is THIS STUFF IS AWESOME! The Weather Man predicted VERY cold temperatures here so my human brought home a pair of boots for me to test out.  At first I thought, “What the heck is this crazy human doing?”  Yeah, they felt a little funny at first, but you know what, I never knew I was such a great dancer! All geared up, my big brother and I were out the door to play in the snow.

Here’s my big brother Ricky, smiling for the camera…he’s such a ham!

As you can see from the photos, it was early morning and the sun was not quite all the way up. It was cold (8 degrees), but my paws felt great! No snow between my toes!

Me and my Boots!

As I mentioned in my last post, there are certain benefits to having a human that works for Ruff Wear. One of them is unlimited access to test gear. Because my little paws are still growing it would not make sense to buy me a pair of boots quite yet but they sure were fun to try (I need to try and track down data on when dogs paws stop growing). One day when I am old enough, I will have a pair of my own. Just like my big brother Ricky.

Got to go…BACK TO THE SNOW!

Sophie

Last month Ruff Wear’s Marketing and Product Teams headed out to Smith Rock in Terrebonne, Oregon to shoot a video for our new DoubleBack™ Harness.  Our veteran dog model, Indie, an adventurous yellow lab, came along to show the harness in action. It was a beautiful fall day and a great way to highlight the how-to’s of our latest harness!

Check out the video on YouTube.
