10 Resolutions for Better Pet Ownership

1. I will take my dog in for annual veterinary checks and keep him/her current on all shots.
2. I will not only pick up all messes that my dog makes in public, but I will also pick up any other messes I find along the way. This will help keep outdoor spaces clean and available to dogs.
3. I will teach my dog a new trick.
4. I will feed my dog food that takes his/her health into as much consideration as my pocketbook.
5. I will use biodegradable bags when picking up after my dog. Better yet, I will invest in a doggie septic system for my yard.
6. I will combat canine obesity by not feeding my dog table scraps, exercising him/her regularly, and investing in healthy dog food.
7. I will find an outdoor activity that my dog and I love. Some Ruff Wear suggestions: hiking, mountain biking, skijoring, paddleboarding, or snowshoeing.
8. I will make a new friend with a fellow dog owner.
9. I will keep my dog properly groomed; brushing, washing, and treating them for fleas regularly.
10. I will love my dog unconditionally, and remember they count on me for their well-being.
Cabin fever got you itching for adventure? Don’t let the winter leave you down and leave your dog bored.
There’s plenty to do with your dog in the cold! In fact, most of the Ruff Wear Pack wait all year for the opportunity to take their dogs out on a cold-weather adventure. So grab your boots and coat (your dog’s too!), and give these great cold-weather adventures a try! Read the rest of this entry »
The Ruff Wear pack may have hung up our coats and gear for the evening, but the Ruff Wear Christmas party was well worth bringing ourselves indoors for once! In the spirit of the holiday season, Ruff Wear rented out the shabby chic Hollinshead Barn to host this year’s party, complete with a bluegrass band, delicious NW wines and beer, and authentic NW catered cuisine.
Though shy to hit the dance floor at first, with a little encouragement the night ended with a dance-off for those who didn’t have to rush back to our dog sitters! The highlight of the evening was the announcing of the “2009 Big Love Award,” won by our Product Director, Niki Singlaub. However, it was a close call…
Not all dog toys are created equal. They can be bouncy, chewy, plush, or interactive. But choosing the right toy for your dog can mean the difference between hours of fun or dollars wasted on a toy that bores your dog.
Here are the major considerations when choosing a toy that’s appropriate for your dog.
Touring the racks at your local outdoor store for the perfect winter coat for yourself can be cumbersome enough, so how do you know which coat to choose for your dog? Which will be the warmest? The most comfortable? The most weather resistant?
Ruff Wear makes three winter coats, all with a different function and purpose in mind—a soft shell, an overcoat, and a fleece.
Our soft shell—the Cloud Chaser™—is the ultimate in full-coverage weather protection. The fabrics act as a shield against all forms of severe cold weather such as wind, rain, snow, and sleet. It’s flexibility and stretch make it the go-anywhere, in any kind of weather, option.
Our friends at backcountry.com recently wrote a piece on the benefits of soft-shell fabrics. With the recent addition of a fleece, hard shell, and soft shell coat to our line, we thought this would be a great opportunity to clarify the differences and best uses for soft shell, hard shell, and fleece fabrics.
What is soft shell?
Soft shell is a newer technology associated with high-end human outerwear; often used in ski, snowboard, and other winter weather outerwear. Soft shell fabric provides the same weather protection as hard-faced fabrics such as Gore-Tex, but is more flexible, breathable and comfortable.
