In anticipation of some lovely summer days ahead, there’s been a lot of chatter about upcoming hiking adventures. As a great solution for a fun day and a fantastic workout, it’s no wonder that hiking ranks as one of Ruff Wear customers’ favorite activities to do with their dogs.
Keeping safety top-of-mind is important however, as things on the trail don’t always go as planned. We hear stories of dogs overstepping boundaries near canyon walls, being taken off-leash and not returning, or simply injuring their paws on the trail. Here are a few reminders to stay safe on the trail:

Love the outdoors and looking for a four-legged companion to share the experience with?
There are particular breeds of dogs that make great hiking companions; dogs whose endurance, carrying capabilities, interests, and body type are ideal for dusty trail jaunts.
It was three years ago this past weekend that I first met Tiki. I wanted to adopt a dog from the local shelter. My new dog had to be athletic so we could run and mountain bike together, smart, and want to go everywhere I went. It’s a hard decision to make; there were so many dogs, all of them needing loving homes.
When I saw him, he was rolling on his back. I could hear him saying “pick me, pick me!” It was love at first sight. We went for a walk together and I found out he understood “sit”, “shake” & “down”. We went into the outdoor pen – he could run, fast! Quickly, I filled out the adoption papers. Tiki was getting a new home. Read the rest of this entry »

Jack, Ricky and Lucy Smile for the Camera (instead of fetch the disc)
With the aerodynamic question solved, we headed down to the Deschutes River to test the buoyancy of several flying discs. To make sure our toys didn’t litter the tributary and our pants stayed dry, we employed two Golden Retrievers (Lucy and Ricky) and a Husky/Shepherd mix named Jack.
To our surprise, the Golden’s didn’t live up to their job title – Retriever. Both Goldens and Jack stood chest deep in the water and watched as the first disc floated downstream. And this isn’t a class IV whitewater section or anything. It took a solid 5 minutes for the disc to meander out of view.
Lesson learned, and our later tests of retrieval were accomplished in the shallowest sections. We learned what we could from the buoyancy tests (and watched the dogs get covered in mud). But we couldn’t get that first disc out of our minds. Read the rest of this entry »
What could be more fun than challenging your dog to a swim or run? We couldn’t think of anything! This year marked the first-ever Doggie Du Dash in Austin, Texas — a swim and run duathlon done entirely with your dog.
The event took place on Monday, May 25.
Owners and their pups swam 375 meters and ran one mile together through the course. Check out the coverage of these canine athletes all geared up in their life vests.
